
There are thousands of Australian addresses a truck simply cannot reach: island homes and resorts, offshore communities, waterfront blocks behind a bush track, marine construction sites, aquaculture leases, national park facilities and every jetty, pontoon and seawall project in the country. For all of them, the delivery of materials, plant and waste becomes a marine movement — and marine movements run on tide, deck strength, landing conditions and approvals, not on a delivery window between 9 and 11. This is how waterfront freight by barge and landing craft actually works, what makes a job easy or impossible, and what to give an operator so the first attempt lands.
Landing craft versus barge: choosing the right platform
A landing craft is a self-propelled, flat-decked vessel with a hinged bow ramp. It drives onto a beach, boat ramp or rock shelf, drops the ramp and discharges directly onto the site — no crane, no wharf, no second handling. Typical Australian landing craft run from about 8 to 20 metres with deck loads from around 5 to 40 tonnes.
A deck barge is an unpowered platform pushed or towed by a tug. It carries far more — 40 to several hundred tonnes — and is the right answer for excavators, piling rigs, concrete pontoons, bulk fill and modular building components. It needs either a ramp it can spud down against, a wharf, or a crane to discharge.
The choice comes down to three questions: what does the heaviest single item weigh, how will it come off at the other end, and what does the landing look like at the working tide.
The four things that make or break a water-access delivery
Experienced marine logistics operators assess every job against the same four constraints before quoting. If you can answer these before you call, you will get an accurate price instead of a range.
- Tide. Beach and ramp landings usually have a workable window of a few hours either side of high water, and in places like the Hawkesbury, Moreton Bay and the far north that window moves an hour a day. The tide sets the programme; everything else fits around it.
- The landing itself. Sand, gravel, rock shelf, a concrete ramp or a pontoon each behave differently under a loaded ramp. A photograph of the landing at low water tells an operator more than a paragraph of description.
- Deck load and footprint. A machine's weight matters, but so does how it distributes that weight and whether it can be secured. Track machines need timber; point loads need spreading.
- Discharge at the far end. Somebody must move the load off the ramp and up the site. A delivery that lands and then sits on a beach as the tide floods is a failure, not a delivery.

Dangerous goods, waste and the rules that come with them
Fuel, gas bottles, lithium batteries, paints, solvents, adhesives and pool chemicals are dangerous goods, and they stay dangerous goods on a fifteen-minute harbour run. The IMDG Code applies: correct classification, declaration, packaging, segregation on deck and placarding, plus a crew briefed on the specific hazard aboard. It adds an hour of paperwork and it removes the risk of a fire nobody can walk away from.
The reverse movement matters as much. Construction and demolition waste, spoil, old pontoons, contaminated material and green waste coming off a water-access site all need a documented disposal path and, in some states, tracking. Plan the backload at the same time as the delivery — an empty return trip is the cheapest waste removal you will ever buy.
Approvals: the part most people discover too late
Repeated beach landings, works in marine parks, activity over seagrass and any occupation of Crown land below mean high water can all require approval, and the requirement varies by state, by council and by waterway authority. In New South Wales that can mean the local council, Transport for NSW maritime, and in some places National Parks. In Queensland it can involve the Department of Environment and, inside the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, GBRMPA.
None of this is a reason to avoid marine delivery. It is a reason to have someone on the job who knows which approval applies before the barge is loaded, because a stop-work order halfway through a build costs more than every other line on the quote combined.
What drives the cost
Water-access delivery is priced by the movement, not the pallet. Understanding the components lets you shape a cheaper job without cutting anything that matters.
- Vessel day rate and crew — usually two crew minimum for a loaded ramp operation.
- Positioning — the run from the vessel's home base to your load point and back, which on remote jobs can exceed the delivery itself.
- Load point access — a wharf with a hardstand and crane is cheap; a soft beach with a hand-ball is not.
- Tidal efficiency — a job that fits one tide costs half of a job that needs two.
- Consolidation — the single biggest saving available. Three trades sending one barge instead of three is a straight two-thirds reduction, and it is entirely a coordination problem.
- Standby and weather — agree in advance who wears a day lost to conditions.
A checklist for planning your delivery
Give an operator the following and you will get a firm price and a first-time landing. Leave them out and you will get a range, a variation, or a barge that turns around.
- Heaviest single item, its dimensions and whether it is on wheels, tracks or a pallet.
- Total tonnage and total deck area required.
- Photographs of both the load point and the landing, ideally at low water.
- Any dangerous goods, with quantities and packaging.
- Site contact who will be present on the day, with a mobile that works at the site.
- What is coming back — waste, plant, empties.
- The date the site actually needs it, and the date it must not arrive before.
